Our Journey

Over Half a Century of Impact in Klamath Falls

Founding and Early Years

The Klamath Basin Senior Citizens’ KBSCC was founded on January 13, 1969 as a membership based organization  in response to a growing need for services and support for the elderly population in Klamath Falls and the surrounding areas. Initially operating from a small rented space, KBSCC’s early years were characterized by grassroots community efforts and volunteerism. Local businesses and community members donated resources, and volunteers organized the first programs, which included basic health screenings, social gatherings, and educational workshops for people aged fifty and above.

Expansion and Development

In 1978, KBSCC obtained a 99 year lease from Klamath County, with the stipulation that a building would be completed within five years. Through the hard work of hundreds of dedicated residents and the financial support of the community, on August 16, 1981, KBSCC completed the building at 2045 Arthur Street in Klamath Falls. This new space allowed for the expansion of our services and facilities in order to meet the needs of our growing senior community. This move was made possible through a combination of community fundraising efforts, hands-on volunteerism, a mortgage of $93,000 underwritten by the United States National Bank of Oregon, grants, and support from local government. If you are interested, we have a large document with the names of the many supporters from this effort hanging in our building.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, KBSCC experienced significant growth. During this period, KBSCC plus developed  a transportation division and began offering more comprehensive health and wellness programs, Regular exercise classes were introduced, and partnerships with local healthcare providers were established to offer more frequent and varied health screenings and educational seminars on topics such as diabetes management and heart health.

Milestones and Major Events

One of the major milestones in the KBSCC’s history was the introduction of the Meals on Wheels program in the early 1990s. This program was a game-changer for many homebound seniors, ensuring they received nutritious meals and regular wellness checks. The success of this program was highlighted in a 1995 report by the Klamath Falls Herald and News, which showcased how the program helped reduce malnutrition and isolation among the elderly.

In the early 2000s, the KBSCC underwent a significant renovation and expansion project, funded by a combination of state grants and local donations. This project, completed in 2003, significantly upgraded kitchen facilities to better support the Meals on Wheels program and on-site Congregate meal services.

In 2012, KBSCC no longer required membership fees in order to participate. All programs and services today are offered at no or very low cost.

Community Integration and Intergenerational Programs

In 2008, the KBSCC launched a groundbreaking intergenerational program in collaboration with local schools. This initiative brought together seniors and students for various activities, such as storytelling sessions, joint art projects, and mentorship programs. The program not only enriched the lives of seniors but also fostered a sense of community and mutual respect between generations. A study conducted by the Klamath County Community Foundation in 2010 highlighted the positive impact of this program on both seniors and students, noting improvements in social skills, empathy, and community engagement.

Response to Challenges

The Klamath Basin Senior Citizens’ KBSCC has also demonstrated resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges. During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the KBSCC quickly adapted its services to meet the needs of its members. Virtual exercise classes, online educational workshops, and telehealth consultations were introduced to ensure that seniors could stay connected and healthy despite social distancing measures. The Meals on Wheels program was expanded to meet the increased demand, and a new initiative to deliver care packages with essential supplies to vulnerable seniors was launched.

Recent Developments

In recent years, the KBSCC has continued to innovate and expand its offerings. In 2021, a new technology literacy initiative was introduced to help seniors navigate the digital world. This program includes classes on using smartphones and accessing online health resources via SHIBA,. The program has been well-received, with many seniors reporting increased confidence and independence in using technology.

Future Considerations

In Klamath County, 40% of residents are over the age of 50, and more than 10% are Veterans. At KBSCC, Veterans make up over 30% of our participants. The senior population in the Klamath Basin is nearly 22%, significantly higher than the national average of 16%. Some estimates suggest that Klamath County’s senior population is where other regions are projected to be by 2040.

How can we adapt to meet the needs of seniors in our community now, while anticipating the growing demand? We must proactively align our programs and infrastructure to address the current and future needs of Klamath County seniors. This involves increasing public awareness and support for our over half-century of dedication to this community.
